Teacher's sex victims settle with church
In October, he was jailed for 10 years for his crimes against 13 young girls.
The abuse happened while Byrnes was the child protection officer at a Toowoomba school from January 2007 to November 2008, when the girls were aged nine and 10.
How many sexual acts did he commit against the girls, they will never be the girls that they were supposed to be.
Their lives were changed and memories of the abuse will be in their thoughts forever, and what do we do? We give the sex abusers short sentences and the opportunity to re-offend.
Less than a year for each girl is not a deterrent for this type of crime. Are they so many that we do not have prisons to put them in?
What does it say about us as a society when a bank robber has a bigger sentence than a paedophile.
We are not valuing our children, and are failing to protect them.
