Links on cancer at chromium sites-Do or can we have the same problem in Australia?

NJ releases 2nd report on cancer at chromium sites
The finding released Wednesday by the Health Department and the Department of Environmental Protection were from a study prompted by a 2008 assessment that found lung cancer rates from 1979 to 2003 were higher in chromium-tainted sites. The latest study examined rates for other types of cancer.
During the 1950s and '60s, waste from chromium ore processing was used as fill material at residential and commercial construction sites. Some of the waste contains hexavalent chromium — a known carcinogen.
The most recent study was based on data from the New Jersey State Cancer Registry and information on the chromium waste sites.
But environmentalists have been critical of the state for allowing developers to build on top of the sites instead of completely removing all toxic material.
